At 6: 58 on the morning of May 1. 1955. the MERCEDES 300 SLR with starting number 658 (starting number = starting time) left the launch pad in Brescia, with Juan Manuel Fangio behind its wheel to attempt the 22nd championship of the 1.600 km-long Mille Miglia.

Description of the original vehicle: The annual endurance race of the Mille Miglia attracted a very impressive group of competitors in 1955. MERCEDES had big plans up its sleeve, so it sent over a fleet of four racing cars, all of the type 300 SLR, which was to make its debut here. Piloted by world-famous top drivers, the 300 SLR was intended to be a passport to victory over such hard competitors as Ferrari, Maserati, and Aston Martin. Half of Italy was on its feet to follow the national racing highlight of the year.

Every minute one car left the famous launch pad in Brescia. With allotted startin number658. the first car of the Mercedes team started off at 6: 58 am (starting number = starting time), and it was piloted by J.M. Fangio without a co-pilot. With starting number 701. Karl Kling took off on the next 300 SLR at 7: 01 am, followed by Hans Herrmann at 7: 04 am with startin number 704. Finally the young daredevil Stirling Moss and his co-pilot Denis Jenkinson left the start line with staring number 722 at 7: 22 am.

At 6: 58 on the morning of May 1. 1955. the MERCEDES 300 SLR with starting number 658 (starting number = starting time) left the launch pad in Brescia, with Juan Manuel Fangio (no co-pilot) behind its wheel to attempt the 22nd championship of the 1.600 km-long Mille Miglia.

Owing to his prudent driving style and outstanding skills behind the wheel, Fangio crossed the finish line in Brescia just next to the winning champion Stirling Moss (also on a MERCEDES SLR).

The outcome of this race became world-famous and went down in racing history subsequently. Stirling Moss turned out to be the triumphant winner.

J.M. Fangio finished 2nd in the race. Karl Kling was caught in an accident and had to retire. Likewise, Hans Herrmann was unable to finish the race due to a fuel spill from the loosened fuel filler cap that forestalled any efforts to carry on.
